Freelance Technical Supervisor

Required for International News Client based in North West London

A member of the technical operations team reporting to the Technical Manager. This role operates the studio lighting, camera vision controls and basic robotic camera operations; ensuring that the highest quality studio output is maintained at all times. Oversight of day-to-day technical requirements of the studio, including liaising with engineering support, is also a key part of the role.

 

Responsibilities

  • Operation and basic programing of the studio lighting desk (Avolites), including balancing light levels, producing a technically correct and creatively pleasing visual output on camera.
  • Operationally adhering to the house style whilst communicating any potential workflow improvements to the Technical Manager.
  • Adjusting the exposure and technical parameters of the studio cameras using RCP’s, so that the highest quality output is maintained, including camera channel matching using the appropriate technical scopes.
  • Operation of remote cameras, including storing shots, referencing cameras and recalling timed in vision camera moves.
  • The adjustment of studio lighting fixtures to meet the varying production requirements of the studio in liaison with the Technical Manager.
  • Fine setting of studio fixtures, including occasional rigging/de-rigging, under the guidance of the Technical Manager.
  • The main contact for technical studio requirements, including supervising any studio and PCR works by technical support or subcontractors as required.
  • Solving issues as they arise, escalating to other relevant departments including raising tickets to technical support.
  • To oversee the technical assistant on shift, ensuring that they are contactable via talkback or another suitable method and utilising them effectively.
  • Assist with studio turnarounds in a safe and effective manner.
  • Communicating faults, upcoming maintenance, changes and special programming requirements to relevant departments.
  • To route signals to in-vision monitors as required using Cerebrum.
  • Patching of cameras, autocues and touchscreen fibres. Performing technical checks of camera channels to ensure that all cameras have correct feeds.
  • To identify faults in equipment under your charge; recognizing and reporting poor quality to team members, department heads as appropriate.
  • To deal tactfully with artists and talent, passing on significant problems to team members and department heads as appropriate.
  • To ensure that the provisions of the Health & Safety at Work Act and other workplace legislation are observed in the studio.
  • To ensure adherence to current risk assessments and safe systems of work observed in the studio; escalating any concerns to Studio Management.
  • Effective and efficient communication with the Technical Manager regarding any issues and changes.

 

Requirements

 

  • Has a good creative eye, able to recognise what looks right on camera, including correct light levels and colour balance. Understands how to use colour creatively in achieving a specific look on camera.
  • Understands the technical fundamentals of a studio lighting desk, including basic operation, recording and updating of cues and altering luminaire attributes.
  • Can correctly align camera channels by using operational controls for their matching in terms of exposure, black level and colour.
  • Has awareness of the Health & Safety Act and able to work in a safe manner in line with legislation.
  • Has a basic understanding of studio lighting fixtures, grip and DMX theory.
  • Must be familiar with existing and new lighting and broadcast technology.
  • High level of communication. The ability to collaborate, influence and communicate effectively with all members of the production team.
  • Can think laterally to solve technical issues.
  • Practical experience of lighting and vision technology in broadcast environments, including lighting control, networks and lighting fixtures.
  • Ability to react rapidly to changing circumstances, maintaining personal effectiveness by managing emotions in the face of pressure, setbacks or when dealing with provocative situations.
